The Archaeological Diving Company Ltd was appointed by Mott MacDonald on behalf of the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Food to undertake the final phase of construction programme monitoring off Dinish Island Quay, Castletownbere Harbour, Co. Cork. This was the last phase of monitoring required by this project, which commenced in 2005. It involved the removal of the existing pier structure and the associated removal of seabed sediments to the bedrock level to facilitate the construction of an improved quay structure.
A regime of monitored excavations and artefact recovery procedures was conducted at the location of the development of the new Dinish Island Quay as part of the development planning requirement. No features of archaeological significance were identified from within the area of proposed impact during this phase of monitoring. A few stray timbers were recovered which were identified as modern.
