Excavation of Site 10.2 in Castlecooke townland, Co. Cork, was carried out for Bord G$is !ireann. The site was identified during monitoring by Bernice Molloy of the topsoil-stripping along the corridor of the Curraleigh West to Midleton pipeline scheme between March and May 2009. Site 10.2 was subsequently excavated in April 2009.
Excavation of this site revealed a burnt mound, a stone-lined trough, three pits and a large amount of stake-holes. The main deposit of the burnt mound measured 24m long (east–west) and 19.5m wide. It was 0.34m deep. A smaller spread of burnt-mound material was located to the north of the large spread. This was c. 2.7m in diameter and covered a single pit.
A stone-lined trough was uncovered below the main burnt mound. It contained a number of fills; an arc of stones located to its west may also have been associated with the trough. Stake-holes lined its southern side. A circular pit, which was lined with stake-holes, was also excavated.
Specialist analysis is ongoing and it is expected that the final report will be completed in 2010.
