Excavation at Careysville, Co. Cork, was carried out along a section of the BGE Curraleigh West to Midleton gas pipeline. The site was identified during topsoil-stripping under supervision. For the purpose of excavation, this site has been renamed 15/1 and 15/2. The site was located between road-crossing (RDX) 16 and the River Blackwater (RVX2) on the very gradual north-facing slope of the southern bank of the Blackwater. The site exists in two adjacent areas, c. 70m apart, on the line of, and to the immediate west of, the intended pipe trench, and extends to the western edge of the stripped area.
To the north (Site 15/1), several circular and other smaller pits were identified over an area measuring c. 60m long and 15m wide. Several stake-and postholes and a slot-trench were identified at the western limit of the excavation forming structural remains. To the south (Site 15/2), six shallow pits, a post-hole and several stake-holes were identified. A post-medieval boundary-ditch was identified at the northern end of the excavated area. A flint arrowhead was recovered from the slot-trench during the excavation of this site. Radiocarbon-dating suggested a Middle–Late Bronze Age date for the northern site (15/1).
