Moore Marine Services Ltd was commissioned by Cronin Millar Consulting Engineers to carry out an underwater impact assessment of a proposed pier extension at the North Pier, Baltimore Harbour, Co. Cork. The assessment took place on 20 October 2009. The timing of the survey coincided with a spring tide and so the maximum foreshore was visible at low water. Visibility at the time of the survey was moderate and the maximum recorded water depth was 3.9m.
The site survey recorded a large bedrock outcrop at the site of the extension of the North Pier. The outcrop extended for the entire length of the terminus of the pier. Surrounding it was a considerable quantity of discarded material which ranged from fishing net to concrete cavity blocks and steel rope. None of this material was perceived as archaeological. Based on the combination of the desktop assessment and the site surveys it would appear that the proposed site was of low archaeological potential with no visible or detectable archaeological materials present.
