Test excavation was carried out in twelve locations along the route of the BGE Curraleigh to Midleton gas pipeline prior to the commencement of construction. The pipeline route measured c. 47km in length and ran from an existing aboveground installation (AGI) at Curraleigh West, Co. Tipperary, to an existing compressor station at Midleton, Co. Cork. The twelve sites that were test excavated were identified either from a walkover survey of the route during the preparation of the EIS or in the Record of Monuments and Places (RMP). Two sites were identified during test excavation. One fulacht fiadh/burnt mound was identified in the townland of Curragh Upper and two fulachta fiadh/burnt mounds were identified adjacent to RMP CO028–007. The pipeline corridor deviated to avoid the latter site and it was preserved in situ while the former site was excavated prior to commencement of construction (see No. 140, Excavations 2009, 09E210).
