St Flannan’s (Killaloe) Diocesan Trust and Ennis Parish propose to develop a site at Ashline for the relocation of Ennis National School. The planning application was returned with a request for further information, including a request for archaeological information. An assessment has been requested which will involve a research component alongside a programme of test excavation. Seven trenches were excavated over the site on 22 April 2009. In general, it would appear that the trenches in the development area revealed unstratified topsoil over natural. The natural along the boundaries of the site is boulder clay overlying limestone. The central portion of the site is formed by outcroppings of limestone, which show some evidence for opencast quarrying. No archaeological material came to light across the whole site.
