Test excavations (1m by 1m) were performed at about twenty locations with elevated phosphate levels within 1km2 of Navan Fort, discovered during a 2008 soil chemical characterisation survey. The majority could be linked to sites from various historic periods: medieval, early modern, and 19th century, through ceramic chronologies. Several showed evidence of cultural layers with fire-cracked rock, charcoal and burnt clay but no historic materials, and probably represent prehistoric sites. Charcoal samples were collected for 14C dating.
