It is proposed to extend the quarry at 32 Glenhead Road, Glenwherry, Co. Antrim. The proposed extension is divided up into ten fields and it is proposed that it will be constructed in a series of phases, working primarily west–east across the site.
Previous archaeological works have been conducted at the site. These consisted of monitoring of topsoil removal within Fields 8 and 9 in Phase 1 and Fields 7 and 10 in Phase 2. Gahan & Long Ltd were appointed to conduct excavation of those features identified within Phase 2 of the development and to undertake monitoring of topsoil removal over the remainder of the site.
Excavation of the identified features revealed extensive evidence of prehistoric activity within this phase of the development. This activity suggested that occupation had occurred here from the Neolithic period into the Bronze Age. The excavated evidence included house structures and cooking pits as well as a number of ephemeral features, which could not be ascribed a function.
