Monitoring of the removal of Gap Bridge was undertaken as part of the Greystones Harbour Development Project. The removal process was carried out in a controlled manner, allowing the monitoring archaeologist to inspect and record the internal fabric of the structure. A representative sample of all components from the structure were retained; this included masonry from the side of the arch (quoin stones), the coping stones from the parapet, and a selection of red bricks from the arch-ring or ‘intrados’ (arch ceiling) were set aside during the removal works. Systematic recording of the standing bridge structure was previously undertaken in March 2008 (see No. 1313 above, 08D010, 08R042).
