The proposed development concerned the construction of an outdoor sports complex comprising a GAA pitch, soccer pitch, a bowling green and associated features. The site is within the constraint area of a graveyard and church site (WI043–020). An assessment in conjunction with test excavation was required.
Test-trenching was carried out on 5, 6 and 8 September 2008. In total, 81 test-trenches were excavated across the site. Testing consisted of nine north–south-aligned trenches spaced at 30m intervals; offsets from these north–south-aligned trenches were at 15m intervals. The testing programme was intensified at the boundary of the constraint area of the graveyard and church site. No finds or features of archaeological significance were exposed during the course of testing; however, due to its location, monitoring of the groundworks under the testing licence was recommended. This work was subsequently undertaken on 18–21 November 2008. No finds or features of archaeological significance were uncovered.
