Planning permission was granted for a second phase of construction on the Portside residential development at Ballygillane Big, Rosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford. The site is located to the south of Rosslare Harbour in an area that has been zoned in the County Wexford Development Plan for ‘Village expansion/mixed use’. Permission was granted subject to a number of conditions, which included the need for an archaeological assessment. The site encompasses c. 7.4 acres and adjoins the c. 8-acre site which comprises Phase 1 of the Portside development.
While twelve trenches were originally included in the trenching layout, local conditions on the day made it necessary to reduce that number to ten. The consistency of results from the trenches across the site negates the necessity to return to test the areas that were omitted. In general, across the site, no features or deposits of archaeological origins were recorded. The nature of the landscape here would suggest that the area was not suited for settlement being poorly drained and relatively infertile. The soil cover would suggest that the land use was for rough grazing on a purely seasonal basis.
