Monitoring was carried out of the groundworks associated with the flood relief works on the Brosna River in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. As the site of the proposed development was situated within WM019–089, Mullingar town, and in close proximity to the former location of the Mullingar town walls, it was necessary to obtain ministerial consent before the works could proceed. As part of the application for the consent a request was made by the DoEHLG for a metal-detection survey along the course of the Brosna River at the location of the proposed works.
A comprehensive survey was carried out on the section of the Brosna River, between the town park and Bleach Yard, which will be impacted on by the flood relief scheme works. This section of the river was waded and a survey was conducted using a hand-held metal detector on 26 June 2008. The metal-detection survey yielded no finds of archaeological significance. The flood relief works were subsequently postponed until 2009.
