Underwater assessment took place of a 30m stretch of the River Brosna and the adjacent Lacy’s Canal, Clonmore, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. The assessment formed part of the pre-disturbance archaeological requirement of the EIS for the Clonmore Link Road Scheme. The link road forms the final section of the Mullingar ring road and will connect the R390 to the N52. It is situated south-west of the town, passing through the townlands of Lynn and Clonmore. A c. 590m-long viaduct will traverse the River Brosna, Lacey’s Canal and the intersecting flood-plain.
Systematic visual inspection and magnetometer survey of the riverbed/canal-bed and the attendant bank structures at each location was undertaken along a 40m east–west stretch of waterway. No archaeologically significant material, deposits, or structures were encountered as part of the survey. The assessment was carried out on 20 February 2008.
