To assess the suitability of St Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore, for under-floor heating and insulation, five floor slabs in the nave and crossing were removed and the ground below was investigated. Late masonry and brickwork, partly associated with old central heating, was found in three trenches. The present stone floor pre-dates the central heating and was probably installed in the early 19th century.
The late 17th-century and medieval floor levels had dropped slightly to the west. No floor remains were found, but grave fills were found from 0.16m (under the crossing) to 0.3m (at the west end) below present floor level.
The robbed remains of mortared stonework, a church wall or a funerary monument was found under the crossing. The stonework is probably medieval and was respected by graves.
