Area 6 was located roughly to the north of Area 5 at the foot of the slope at Chainage 980 and was investigated as part of the A5 road realignment scheme running south from the current A4 to the immediate south-west of Ballygawley for 2.7km towards Aughnacloy. Whilst no officially recorded site lay along the actual corridor of the proposed alignment, NIEA felt that there was potential for unexpected archaeological deposits and features to be identified during the topsoil-strip and therefore a programme of monitoring was required.
The area measured c. 5m by 5m. Only one feature was discovered in this area. This consisted of a circular flat-based pit, 1.2m by 1.2m in diameter and 0.25m in depth, with one or maybe two roughly rectangular extensions (0.25–0.3m by 0.2m) lying opposite to each other. These could have formed channels for air pipes leading into a circular-based furnace. Most of the feature was filled with charcoal and burnt and fire-cracked stones, which might confirm the interpretation of the pit as the remains of a furnace.
