Area 5 was investigated during the construction of the A5 road realignment scheme running south from the current A4 to the immediate south-west of Ballygawley for 2.7km towards Aughnacloy. Whilst no officially recorded site lay along the actual corridor of the proposed alignment, NIEA felt that there was potential for unexpected archaeological deposits and features to be identified during the topsoil-strip and therefore a programme of monitoring was required.
Area 5 was located at Chainage 1215 and measured c. 5m by 5m. The site consisted of two ephemeral subcircular shallow pits (1.28m by 1m and 0.45m by 0.43m) situated on the top of a relatively steep slope. No archaeological evidence could be retrieved to link these features with any particular activity. They were roughly 0.6m apart and represent the only possible archaeology in the surrounding area. The larger feature was heavily eroded on its south-western half. The deposits contained no artefacts or charcoal or other datable material.
