Area 2 was located between Chainages 1900 and 2000 and was investigated as part of the A5 road realignment scheme running south from the current A4 to the immediate south-west of Ballygawley for 2.7km towards Aughnacloy. Whilst no officially recorded site lay along the actual corridor of the proposed alignment, NIEA felt that there was potential for unexpected archaeological deposits and features to be identified during the topsoil-strip and therefore a programme of monitoring was required.
The site consisted of the remains of a burnt mound, which was composed of a deposit of brownish-black clayey silt, charcoal and burnt stone containing occasional mid-sized stones. The entire deposit measured 21m east–west by 17m and was a maximum of 0.3m thick. Three features were exposed beneath the mound following its removal: two pits and a natural depression/tree throw.
