Area 7 was investigated during the construction of the A5 road realignment scheme running south from the current A4 to the immediate south-west of Ballygawley for 2.7km towards Aughnacloy. Whilst no officially recorded site lay along the actual corridor of the proposed alignment, NIEA felt that there was a potential for unexpected archaeological deposits and features to be identified during the topsoil-strip and therefore a programme of monitoring was required.
This area was located at Chainages 010–040 and measured roughly 30m by 30m. The site was characterised by a number of modern furrows and a possible small boundary ditch running over the whole length of the area in a south-easterly direction. At the north-western edge around five medium-sized pits were discovered containing charcoal and several flint flakes.
An area with seven possible stake-holes, forming no identifiable structure, and several pits was situated in the north-eastern part of the site. Apart from a possible more recent potato storage pit and the aforementioned furrows, the southern half of Area 7 was archaeologically sterile.
