These sites were investigated as part of the proposed corridor improvements of the line of the A4 between Dungannon and Ballygawley where 15km of new road will be constructed. The desk-based assessment undertaken by John Cronin & Associates identified a total of 67 areas requiring pre-development testing or recording, of which 21 were located on the route of the proposed realignment between Dungannon and Ballygawley. These show archaeological activity ranging from the prehistoric through to the Early Christian and post-medieval periods. Situated in an area of archaeological sensitivity, there are several sites of archaeological and industrial interest in the nearby environs.
Area 37 was excavated under the monitoring license and comprised nine possible pits and a possible post-hole. All features were contained within an area which measured 55m by 25m. None of the features produced any archaeological finds to help suggest a possible use or date.
Area 38 was excavated under the monitoring licence and comprised three possible pits. While two of these features were quite shallow, one was a large circular stone-filled pit. All features were contained within an area which measured 70m by 40m. None of the features produced any archaeological finds to help suggest a possible use or date.
