A pre-planning test excavation was undertaken on 18 April 2008 to the rear of 51–53 Grove Street, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary. The site is located within the northern limit of the zone of archaeological potential for the town of Roscrea at the junction of Grove Street and The Crescent (TN012–010). The proposed development is a three-storey mixed-use development. The site contained standing buildings and a garden on the eastern and western half of the site respectively.
The site was assessed on the basis of two mechanically excavated test-trenches and a test-pit to the rear of the standing buildings, in the garden and yard respectively. Both test-trenches had relatively similar stratigraphy, consisting of topsoil overlying loose grey/brown soil that in turn overlay orange/brown subsoil. The test-trench located at the north-west portion of the site, adjacent to the southern site boundary, encountered a modern dump of kitchen ware with metallic pots and sherds of modern ceramics and glass. The test-trench located at the northern portion of the site, adjacent to the northern site boundary, encountered a modern burial of a small dog.
No features or materials of archaeological significance were encountered during the excavation of the test-trenches and test-pit.
