Five test-trenches were opened on the imprint of a house site in Kilcoolyabbey townland close to the Tipperary/Kilkenny county border. The site borders Kilcoolyabbey Demesne and is c. 1.25km north-east of Kilcooly Abbey, a Cistercian foundation dating to 1200. The proposed house site is located to the south of an enclosure, which is sited on the opposite side of the public road.
No features were found in three of the test-trenches. In Trench 1 a linear feature, 0.4m wide, extended across its north-east end. Infilled with topsoil, it appeared to be agricultural. Located in the centre of another test-trench there was a dump of small and medium stones intermixed with topsoil. This feature is considered to be a modern dump of stone and topsoil infill. The natural depositions across the site varied from a glacial till-like soil to a fine-grained light-orange/brown sandy clay and occasional spreads or pockets of sand.
