Application has been made to construct a single-storey extension to the rear of a building at 3 Burke Street, Fethard. Part of Fethard town wall forms the rear boundary to the site. Groundworks on the site involved the reduction of part of the existing ground level by 0.9m at maximum (including the removal of c. 0.5m-high raised beds and modern garden features), following which a raft foundation would be constructed for the flat-roofed extension. All ground reduction and disturbance (including the demolition of stone outbuildings) at the site was monitored in April 2008. Post-medieval garden features and the remains of post-medieval outbuildings were identified and recorded. No medieval deposits or features were noted at any stage of the work. The works did not involve any modifications to the town wall at the rear of the site, and existing services were reused as part of the new construction.
