Testing was undertaken in advance of constructing a small commercial unit at a site located in the centre of Clonmel town, to the rear of Market Street. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential for Clonmel town. Two test-trenches were opened on the site. The upper stratigraphy comprised 19th- and 20th-century deposition within which a culvert was discovered. A well-constructed wall and flagstone floor were uncovered beneath the 19th/20th-century fill. This site was the location of the Shambles, which was built by 1803. It was likely that both the wall and flagstone floor were associated with this structure.
