Cashel Town Council and the Heritage Council undertook conservation works of two sections of Cashel town wall. The works were located on the portion of wall forming the south-eastern boundary of St John’s Cathedral, between the sites of John’s and Friar’s Gates. The works involved restoration of wall core, surface pointing and wall capping of 18th-century rebuilt section of the city wall, built on original 13th-century wall. Both internal and external faces of the wall received restoration, with Portion A’s length at 7.3m and Portion B’s at 24.2m. Both were orientated south-west to north-east. Funding constraints meant that the full length (95m) of the wall did not receive any work beyond Portions A and B.
Monitoring and metal detecting occurred in tandem with removal of stone facing, core pinning and injection of mortar bonding into the wall core. The monitoring also consisted of assessment of stone replacement and wall capping. The work was conducted between 24 September and 7 November 2008.
No architectural fragments, artefacts or materials of an archaeological nature were uncovered. All materials removed from the wall were reinserted to their original position. Further materials added to the wall composition, namely Liscannor stone capping on the wall-walk, hydraulic lime sand mix core insertion and grouting consisting of No. 2 coarse soured lime putty and sand, were all in keeping with the requirements of ministerial consent.
