An excavation was undertaken at No. 7 and 8 Bank Place over a three-week period on 3–21 November 2008, following the discovery of archaeological strata during archaeological trial pit investigations. The development site lies within the medieval walled town of Cashel. There are a significant number of extant medieval structures within the town, including four sections of town wall, an urban tower-house and medieval buildings. The medieval religious houses of the Dominicans, the Franciscans and the Cistercians further highlight the importance of the town during the medieval period.
The development site spans the width of 1.5 medieval burgage plots at the street front and just over two plot widths at the rear. It is also located c. 20m from the presumed site of Canopy Gate.
The excavation revealed post-medieval features including walls, pits, post-holes, two/three wells and a number of drains. No medieval features were identified within the site, with medieval pottery recovered from later features. It is likely that post-medieval activity obliterated any medieval material which might have existed on this site.
