2008:1100 - CAHER: Abbey Street, Tipperary

The proposed development site is located on the east side of Abbey Street, on the north-west side of Caher town, Co. Tipperary. Six test-trenches were machine excavated in the area of the proposed development. Overburden was removed from the trenches to a depth of between 1m and 2.5m and clay was encountered beneath this. It was evident from the trenches that large quantities of material were dumped on this site over the past number of years, probably in an attempt to raise the ground above river flood levels. In Trenches 1–3 water ingressed at a depth of 1m. No finds or features of an archaeological nature were noted during testing.
