The site is located within the zone of potential for historic Ballina. Three trenches were excavated in advance of the construction of a mixed-use commercial development. The trenches were excavated to the rear of an existing structure fronting on to Main Street. They were dug to an average depth of 1m. Generally the stratigraphy consisted of a 0.3m-deep topsoil layer overlying a 0.55m-deep layer of sandy silt with slate, brick and rubble fragments. The natural subsoil consisted of a dark-pinkish-brown sandy clay. Nothing of an archaeological nature was discovered during the test-trenching.
