Monitoring was undertaken during minor remedial groundworks at the Sligo Methodist church over a period of four days from June to July 2008. Underpinning and stabilisation of the existing church foundations involved the excavation, by machine, of a series of small trenches adjacent to the south-west exterior of the church structure.
The process of underpinning required the successive excavation and backfilling of four rectangular shaped trenches each measuring 1.2m in length. Overall, the foundations excavated adjacent to the rear of the church measured c. 4.85m long, 1m wide and 1.5m deep. A sewer pipe trench measuring 4m long, 1m wide and 0.6m deep was also excavated adjacent to the rear of the church.
This second phase of works followed on from a previous phase of monitoring already undertaken by ADS (Doyle and Eoin Halpin, Excavations 2007, No. 1549) from December 2007 to January 2008. These earlier groundworks involved underpinning the interior church structure along the south and west walls and the excavation of two foundation pads in the basement.
No archaeological features or artefacts were exposed during monitoring.
