A section of the southern bank of the River Garavogue foreshore, c. 60m to the north-west of Hughes Bridge, was dredged by machine to facilitate the installation of several floating concrete berthing pontoons and an access ramp at the Timber Jetty, Port of Sligo. An area of foreshore measuring c. 60m long by 9m wide and 2.5m in depth was dredged, adjacent to the modern jetty. At the request of Sligo County Council, the dredged material was inspected on 6 October 2008. Several metallic objects and other detritus of modern origin were noted, but no archaeological material or artefacts were recovered. An archaeological dive survey, 08D79, accompanied by a hand-held metal detection survey, 08R261, was also undertaken by Frank Mallon (ADS). This dive survey noted the position of timber structural piles which previously would have supported a now defunct section of the adjacent timber jetty; however, no archaeological artefacts or material were recovered.
