Test excavations were carried out in Ballydoogan townland in the Kevinsfort area west of Sligo town, along the line of the proposed route of the western distributor road. Testing was initially carried out along the proposed route of the road on 9–25 July 2007 by Giles Dawkes, when a total of 1940m of trenches was excavated (Excavations 2007, No. 1550). During this phase of test-trench excavation an area at the northern end of the proposed route was not fully tested due to the presence of a stand of mature trees. This second phase of test excavation was carried out on 30 January 2008 after the trees were felled and removed from the site. A series of test-trenches that were partially excavated in July 2007 were reopened and fully excavated. No archaeological features were identified within the trenches.
