In the four cuttings excavated at the site in 2003 the extant remains of the principal cell block and parts of the airing yards were identified (Excavations 2003, No. 1598). However, a much larger percentage of the 19th-century structures had been completely removed since the 1960s when the current garda station and various council buildings were erected. The current excavation was quite limited and was located in those areas not available for excavation in 2003; these included the Male and Female Hospitals, more of the principal cell block and a passage linking the former governor’s residence to the chapel.
