Underwater assessment of a 1.3km by 30m area of lakebed (Lough Ree) was undertaken prior to the insertion of an outfall pipe associated with the proposed wastewater treatment plant at Portrunny, Co. Roscommon. The outfall pipe will run east-north-east from Cruit townland and extend 1.2km into the lake to terminate at 198300 259600. A buffer zone was incorporated into the survey, extending the survey up to 10m either side of the pipeline corridor.
Systematic visual inspection of the lakebed impact area was undertaken. In addition a metal-detection survey was undertaken across a 200m length of the pipeline route. No archaeologically significant material, deposits, or structures were revealed within the survey area. The work was carried out on 7 February 2008.
