Testing was undertaken at the site of Our Lady of Lourdes’ Church in May 2008. The testing was carried out in compliance with conditions included in the grant of planning for the construction of an extension to the sacristy on the north side of the church. The church was constructed in 1858 on, or adjacent to, the site of a former Augustinian abbey. The fragmentary remains of a former church are located to the east of the present church, and comprise part of a western gable wall with exposed footings of part of the northern return wall. In addition, part of the southern return wall is identifiable as a raised linear grass-covered feature.
Following discussion with the National Monuments Service, it was agreed that the test-trenches would coincide with the proposed foundation trenches. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered.
