CRDS Ltd have been retained by Meath County Council to act as the archaeological consultants on the bundled wastewater collection system for County Meath, to be carried out in eight towns: Athboy, Donore, Duleek, Kilmainham Wood, Moynalty, Rathcairn, Rathmoylan and Summerhill. This project is expected to continue until 2009. A total of 1564.25 linear metres of pipe will be laid in and around Summerhill. All this work will be located on roads. The pipeline will enter the constraint ring around the village cross (ME043–020).
To date, the remains of three viaducts thought to be modern, a ditch and the partial remains of a wall of unknown date but also likely to be modern have been the only features encountered. Works are nearing completion but monitoring will continue into early 2009.
CRDS Ltd were also subsequently awarded the ‘Design Build and Operate’ contract for the scheme. This consists of wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and outflow pipes in each of the eight towns. In Summerhill this required monitoring in advance of a new wastewater treatment plant and associated access road. The plant was located in the townland of Clonmahon. It had a maximum footprint of 75m by 125m; the access road was 5m in width and 460m in length. These works were undertaken as an extension to the existing licence between May and September 2008. No archaeological remains were encountered.
