Monitoring undertaken at the site of a proposed flood amelioration project at Clonee, Co. Meath, between August and October 2008. Five concentrated areas of archaeological activity were identified; these were designated Areas 1–5. Several isolated features were also identified throughout the site.
Area 1 consisted of a possible prehistoric large oval pit, measuring c. 6m by 7.5m. It was surrounded on the east and west side by eight possible small pits and several post- and stake-holes. A possible medieval curvilinear ditch was identified at the western edge of the area. Area 2 consisted of a possible prehistoric large pit. It was surrounded on the north and east sides by post- or stake-holes and a hearth, suggestive of fulacht fiadh activity. A possible post-medieval structure with associated spread was identified in Area 3. A post-medieval ditch was also uncovered. Area 4 consisted of a series of ditches and pits of probable medieval date. The very disturbed remains of an individual were also uncovered. Area 5 consisted of several spreads of archaeological material, burning and kiln activity, pits and linear features. The majority of the features identified in this area appear to be broadly medieval in date.
Two additional areas were stripped of topsoil in order to establish a temporary compound and haulage road. Possible medieval features in the form of ditches and spreads were identified. A record was made of the features and the topsoil was reinstated.
