Monitoring took place during road redevelopment by Mayo County Council along the routes of the R314 and the L1202. The scheme facilitated improved vehicle access between the Shell terminal site in Ballinaboy and the landfall site at Glengad, a distance of 9km. Redevelopment impacted on areas of constraint around a medieval church (MA011–00501) and graveyard (MA011–00502), a cist burial (MA004–017) and a large mound (MA004–015). Monitoring also occurred in areas of blanket bog, at river crossings and a greenfield site.
The road redevelopment did not interfere with standing archaeological remains or subsurface deposits. No new archaeological features or deposits were uncovered during the ground disturbance associated with the scheme.
