Pre-development testing was carried out on 21 and 22 February 2008 at a site at Muckrussaun, The Neale, Co. Mayo. The proposed development was located within the constraint for MA121–001, a ring-barrow located 13m from the southern boundary of the site. The development consisted of a serviced dwelling with a septic tank, proprietary effluent treatment unit, percolation area and a garage/shed. It was located in a field of pasture.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of four trenches, which measured 85m, 25.2m, 25.4m and 40.8m long respectively, 0.9–1.2m wide and 0.2–0.7m deep. Below the topsoil was orange/grey plastic clay, orange/grey firm clay loam and bedrock. The topsoil contained two modern pottery sherds. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed.
