Pre-development testing was carried out on 18 September 2008 as part of an archaeological assessment for a proposed development at Kiltimagh Road, Knock, Co. Mayo. Six parallel test-trenches ranging from 30m to 90m in length were excavated throughout the site.
Grass was growing directly on top of peat, which averaged 0.35m in depth. The peat had a minimum thickness of 0.25m in the northern part of the site but was deeper to the south at 0.6m. It contained moderate amounts of disintegrating wood throughout and was overlying bluish grey gravel and sand with occasional large angular stones and moderate inclusions of dauby clay. A number of drainage pipes traversed the trenches at intervals. No archaeological features, finds or deposits were revealed during testing.
