Pre-development testing was carried out on 11 and 12 February 2008 at a site at Circular Road, Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo. Testing was required due to the size of the proposed development. The nearest monument, a ringfort (MA080–032), was located c. 60m away to the north-north-east.
The proposed development consisted of the construction of five townhouses and six apartments arranged in three blocks with access road, footpaths, provision for off-street car parking, landscaping throughout and connection to the public sewer network and water mains, together with all ancillary siteworks. It was located over two overgrown fields of pasture.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of six trenches. The trenches measured 18.1m, 49.5m, 48.7m, 24.5m, 50.4m and 38m long respectively, 1–1.8m wide and 0.35–1.9m deep. Below the topsoil was orange/grey loose sandy loam and fill. The topsoil contained plastic, a small number of modern pottery sherds and one modern glass fragment. The fill contained several sherds of modern pottery (mostly whiteware), modern glass fragments, slate fragments, timber, plastic and tiles dating to the second half of the 20th century. Two parallel plastic coaxial cables crossed three of the trenches.
Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed.
