Pre-development testing was carried out on 25 June 2008 at a site at Kildarra, Tulrahan, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. The proposed development site was partially located within the constraint for ecclesiastical remains (MA102–042), which consisted of a church and graveyard. The monument was located directly across the road from the development, 8m west-south-west of the west-south-west site boundary. The proposed development, which consisted of the construction of a dwelling house, garage and septic tank with all ancillary works, was located within a large, relatively flat, field of pasture.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of four trenches, which measured 22.8m, 49.1m, 19.6m and 29.5m long respectively, 1.1–1.4m wide and 0.2–1.5m deep. Below the topsoil in two of the trenches were two types of fill, the result of the backfilling of a trench excavated earlier this decade to house a large water main and the backfilling by the landowner of a small quarry located in the field in the late 1960s. The topsoil and fill contained modern artefacts. Below the fill was natural subsoil. Below the topsoil in the remaining two trenches were natural subsoils. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed.
