Pre-development testing was carried out on 28 October 2008 at a site at Kilbride, Newport, Co. Mayo. The proposed development site was partially located within the constraint for ecclesiastical remains (MA068–016). The proposed development site was located immediately west of the northern half of the graveyard and contained a slatted shed and silage slab. The development consisted of the retention of the shed and slab and the construction of an adjoining slatted shed/agricultural storage shed.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of two trenches, which measured 46.5m and 20.8m long respectively, 0.9–1.2m wide and 0.75–1.4m deep. Below the topsoil, fill and concrete surface were redeposited topsoil and subsoil, orange/brown plastic clay and orange/grey/brown firm boulder clay. A plastic field drain crossed one of the trenches. Both trenches contained sections of undisturbed natural stratigraphy and sections of disturbed stratigraphy. The disturbed sections were the result of the construction of the slatted shed and adjacent silage slab in the 1990s. No artefacts were recovered and nothing of archaeological significance was revealed.
