Pre-development testing was carried out on 12 May 2008 at a site at Corroy townland, Ballina, Co. Mayo. The proposed development site was located within the constraint for a ringfort (MA039–073). The monument was located 12m north of the northern site boundary. The development site was located within a field of pasture, with modern farm outbuildings located along the southern and western site boundaries. A second ringfort (MA039–074) was visible on higher ground 50m west of the site. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a dwelling house, double domestic garage, proprietary effluent treatment unit and percolation area.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of five trenches, which measured 40.4m, 65.6m, 21.9m, 36m and 6.4m long respectively, 1–1.25m wide and 0.3–1.05m deep. Below the topsoil was orange/grey/brown/black friable sandy loam and loose grey sand and gravel. The topsoil contained one rim sherd of modern pottery and one red-brick fragment. The sandy loam contained an amount of naturally decaying rock. Two modern water services were visible in three of the trenches. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed.
