Pre-development was carried out on 29 September 2008 at a site at Clooncorraun and Cloonenagh townlands, Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. The site was partially located within the constraint for an enclosure (MA117–017), of which no surface trace survived. The monument would have been located roughly midway along the southern boundary of the proposed development site, which was located within a large (gently undulating) field of pasture, and contained a roofless ruined stone cottage near its east end. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a dwelling house and garage, renovation of the ruin to become a home office and the installation of a PETU and percolation area.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of five trenches which measured 25.5m, 30.4m, 40.5m, 25m and 50m long respectively, 0.9–1.3m wide and 0.1–0.85m deep. The testing revealed evidence of disturbance caused by land/field clearance in all five trenches where the stratigraphy consisted of topsoil above natural subsoil and bedrock. A 20mm-diameter water service crossed two of the trenches. No artefacts were recovered and nothing of archaeological significance was revealed.
