Due to the proximity of the proposed development at Claremont, Claremorris, to MO101–018, ‘Liscoll’, a univallate ringfort, it was required that an assessment be undertaken prior to the granting of planning permission.
In general the development area is quite level land, fluctuating slightly to give an undulating surface. Over 1.6km of test-trenches were excavated with 1.1km in close proximity to the RMP site. In all cases the trenches revealed unstratified topsoil over natural. The natural is boulder clay with considerable evidence for iron panning and pockets of decayed limestone. Areas within the site have been reclaimed using construction and demolition debris. In other areas sumps have been excavated and filled with rubble as part of land improvement works, probably while this land was part of the Claremont Demesne. During the testing no features or deposits of archaeological origin were identified.
