Test excavations took place at Castleburke, Ballintubber, Co. Mayo, on 1 September 2008. The eponymous castle (MA099–013) was originally a 13th-century Anglo Norman build that was later associated with the McWilliam Iochtair and in particular Tiobaid na Long. The site of the proposed dwelling house is adjacent to a house scheduled for demolition, located 60m from the castle. Three test-trenches were opened on the footprint of the proposed house. Nothing of archaeological significance was found.
