An assessment carried out in 2007 on the site of a proposed industrial development at Carrowntreila, Ballina, Co. Mayo, found that preliminary siteworks had already commenced, with the topsoil cleared and an access roadway partially excavated. The site is located in the vicinity of an enclosure (MA039–056) and site excavation works had encroached within a number of metres of the monument; however, the monument itself remained intact. An examination of the disturbed area revealed no features of archaeological significance, but it is likely that an outer bank of the enclosure was destroyed by the construction of a roadway in the 19th century. Two test-trenches were mechanically excavated in the area of the proposed roadway that had not been disturbed by previous site excavations. The testing revealed no features or artefacts of archaeological significance. A metal-detection survey (08R107) at the site led to the recovery of some 230 finds, the vast majority dating to the 19th and 20th centuries.
