The site is located in the townland of Carrowmore, less than 500m west of the town of Knock in Co. Mayo, and is adjacent to two existing telecommuni-cation structures situated on a hill in an otherwise low-lying boggy landscape.
There are three monuments listed in the RMP within 1km of the development. These consist of an enclosure (MA092–022) c. 30m east of the site, a ringfort (MA092–021) c. 380m south-south-west of the site, a series of ecclesiastical remains (MA092–023) c. 320m east-north-east of the site and an earthwork (MA092–096) c. 870m south-east of the site.
The development impact area, measuring 10m by 10m, was stripped to the surface of subsoil to determine whether any archaeologically significant remains were present. The area was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.27m. It contained sod, and subsoil, comprising undifferentiated friable clay with small stone inclusions, for a depth of c. 50–70mm. This overlay natural, consisting of compact friable clay with frequent small stone inclusions for a depth of c. 0.2m. There were a few larger limestone stones present measuring c. 0.3m by c. 0.1m. No features of archaeological potential were noted. Two sherds of modern pottery and a clay-pipe stem were recovered.
