Thirteen test-trenches were cut through a predominantly peaty field where there were plans to construct a daycare centre for the elderly at Bunacurry. In the adjacent field to the north-east, a Catholic monastery was founded in 1852 as a response to the newly established Protestant Mission. The monastery was destined for the Third Order of St Francis, and large schools for the education of the children from the surrounding villages were attached (McDonald 1977). No features of archaeological significance became evident, nor evidence for features from the nearby monastery.
