The proposed development site is located on the Doylesfort road area of Lisdoo, c. 1km north of Dundalk town centre. The site is apparently waste ground that was once a working farm and is located within the zone of archaeological potential for a Lisdoo ringfort, LH007–016. A souterrain (LH007–01602), now inaccessible, is situated in the interior of this ringfort.
A programme of test-trenching around the perimeter of the fort and in the area of the proposed development has revealed nothing of archaeological significance. A buffer zone of at least 10m was recommended when constructing/altering the entrance from Doylesfort Road and 15–20m around the rest of the monument. The 10m zone is necessitated by a 19th-century access road associated with the derelict farmhouses. This road will be retained and altered to serve as the main access to the development site and is at a minimum of 11–12m from the outer bank of Lisdoo fort.
