Pre-development testing was carried out of a site at 27–28 Bridge Street, Dundalk, on 15 May 2008. The area proposed for development lies at the east of Bridge Street within the boundary of the historic town of Dundalk (LH007–019).
Test excavation undertaken in the area of proposed development identified a series of occupation layers relating to the medieval period. It is possible that these deposits represent the remains of a medieval street-side dwelling along with a rear garden, refuse layer and a possible property boundary. A paved stone surface uncovered in Trench 2 may relate to a medieval laneway.
The area of proposed development is considered to be one of high archaeological potential, with particular reference to the retrieval of features relating to the medieval occupation of Dundalk town.
